World Oceans Day: safeguarding the blue heart of our planet
How the MSC Foundation is driving action to restore, protect, and inspire ocean stewardship
Focus Area: Marine Conservation
At the MSC Foundation, the ocean is more than a cause — it’s a commitment. It sustains life, shapes cultures, and connects us all. But today, it is also at risk. Climate change, overfishing, and marine ecosystem degradation are putting immense pressure on our blue planet. That’s why marine conservation is one of the MSC Foundation’s core focus areas. As part of the MSC Group — a company born of the sea — we’re proud to lead initiatives that combine science, education, and partnerships to drive meaningful change for our ocean.
At Ocean Cay, we’re restoring life below water through the Super Coral Reefs Programme. By cultivating heat-resilient coral species, we are helping to regenerate damaged reef systems critical to biodiversity. Ocean Cay is now recognised as a Hope Spot by Mission Blue — a global designation for areas essential to ocean health. With the opening of our new Marine Conservation Centre, thousands of visitors each year can engage directly with coral science and become part of the solution.
In Formentera, Spain, we are working with Asociación Vellmari and Mission Blue to restore precious seagrass meadows — essential habitats that filter water, absorb carbon, and shelter marine life. These efforts reflect our broader strategy to support nature-based solutions in vulnerable coastal areas.
Through our partnership with the IUCN, we are co-funding a major assessment of global coral species for the Red List of Threatened Species. This foundational work will guide conservation action and policy decisions across reef ecosystems worldwide.
Across Europe, we are collaborating with Marevivo to bring ocean education into classrooms — empowering young people with the knowledge and values to protect the sea. Because the future of the ocean depends on the stewards we raise today.
This World Oceans Day, we renew our dedication to sustaining what sustains us — taking action where it matters most, for the sake of the future generations.
